What are Neuromodulators?

Neuromodulators serve to minimize the look of moderate to severe lines in the face. These agents target what are known as dynamic wrinkles – caused by repeated muscular contractions, such as frowning and squinting.

The injectable treatment is derived from a purified protein and works to relax the muscles and introduce a refreshed appearance that doesn’t sacrifice natural facial expression.

Here are the products we work with at OLC.

Benefits

Treatments are quick and easy and some patients start to see results within 24 hours of treatment. Best results appear 2 weeks post-treatment. The most obvious benefit increased confidence produced by a more relaxed and refreshed appearance that can last up to four months!

Ideal Candidate

If you’re not happy with your crow’s feet, forehead lines or frown lines between the brows, you should consider having a neuromodulator injection.

What to Expect

A neuromodulator injection is quick and simple, with no downtime. After meeting with our Cosmetic Injection Specialist to determine your desired outcome, the procedure itself takes only 10 to 15 minutes. A tiny amount of the substance is injected with a fine needle into the muscle being treated. The process is virtually painless.

Pre-/Post-Treatment

Prior to your neuromodulator treatment, you should:

  • avoid any medications or herbal supplements that increase risk of bleeding. These may include any Aspirin-containing over-the-counter products, NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) like Ibuprofen and Naproxen, Rantidine (Zantac), as well as herbal supplements like ginko biloba, garlic, ginseng, fish oil, dong quai, feverfew, and tumeric, as well as high potency vitamin E, in order to avoid bruising at the site

After your neuromodulator treatment, you should:

  • avoid rubbing the injection site or lying down, as this could allow the product to potentially diffuse to another part of the body. You should also avoid exercise for 24 hours

Will my face show emotions and expressions?

Neuromodulators are intended to enhance your look, not change it – you can still smile, frown and be expressive. The treatment only relaxes the muscle beneath the lines at the point of injection, so the other elements of your facial expression remain active. It also has no effect on the sensory nerves, so you will have normal feeling in the treated areas.

When will I see results and how long will they last?

You’ll begin to see results as soon as 24 hours after your treatment, and the lines may continue to fade up to two weeks afterward. The effects can last up to 4 months.

What happens when the treatment stops working?

The effects of neuromodulators will gradually disappear until the treated area regains movement. For the best results, continue treating the area every 4 months, or however often is suggested.

What are the side effects?

The side effects can be pain, tenderness and/or bruising at the site of injection, as well as generally feeling unwell, lasting up to six weeks after the treatment. There may also be weakness and rarely, changes in the way the heart beats, chest pain, skin rash and allergic reaction including shortness of breath, wheezing or difficulty breathing; or swelling of the face, lips or tongue or other parts of the body; rash, itching, or hives on the skin.

Seek immediate medical attention if swallowing, speech or respiratory problems arise. Tell your physician if you experience any difficulties in swallowing food after a neuromodulator injection, as it could be related to the dosage.

While side effects are possible, they are, however, rare. Our Cosmetic Injection Specialist will go over all safety information during your initial consultation.

How much does a treatment cost?

The price depends on the amount of product needed and the areas of the face being treated. Our Cosmetic Injection Specialist will determine the right amount of product required for you to achieve a refreshed look and provide you with a cost estimate during the free consultation.

Are there creams that are better than neuromodulators?

No scientific evidence indicates that creams work better than neuromodulators. While creams work well on the surface of the skin, neuromodulators work below the surface to relax the muscles that are the root cause of lines and wrinkles.
