What are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are an injectable, synthetic form of hyaluronic acid. At the Ottawa Laser Clinic, our dermal fillers instantly restore your skin’s volume and smooth away deep lines and facial creases with no surgical procedure and minimal downtime.

As we age, our skin loses elasticity, volume and the amount of hyaluronic acid within gradually diminishes. As a result, the skin becomes dryer, thinner, and the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles are more apparent. Dermal fillers are an excellent remedy for this inevitable stage of skin aging.

Benefits

Dermal fillers can be used to address a variety of concerns related to the facial aging process, including:

  • Adding volume and smoothing out the deep creases that run from the nose to the mouth (called nasolabial folds or laugh lines).
  • Plumping thin lips and smoothing out vertical lines around the edges of the lips.
  • Augmenting cheeks to enhance their shape, often restoring youthful fullness.
  • Filling out depressions (hollows) under the eye area.
  • Making indented scars from acne or chicken pox more even with surrounding skin.
  • Increasing volume to fill out gauntness in the lower cheek or temple area, which most often occurs due to fat pads shifting beneath the surface of the skin.

All of our injectable services are performed by our Cosmetic Injection Specialist.

 Ideal Candidate

If your skin has shown signs of losing its elasticity and you wish to revitalize your appearance with a more youthful glow, dermal fillers are the answer. However, there are some people for whom dermal fillers may not be a wise solution, unfortunately. These include pregnant or breastfeeding women, and those with a history of hypertrophic scarring, autoimmune disease, autoimmune deficiency, recurrent sore throats, rheumatic fever, porphyria, or taking anti-coagulation or immunosuppressive medication.

Pre-/Post-Treatment

Prior to dermal filler treatment, you should:

  • avoid using Aspirin, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (such as Ibuprofen), St. John’s Wort, or high doses of vitamin E supplements, as these agents may increase bruising and bleeding at the injection site
  • speak with your doctor if you have previously suffered from facial cold sores. They may prescribe a medication to minimize recurrence.

After your dermal filler treatment, you should:

  • avoid touching the treated area for the first 6 hours following treatment, so you do not accidentally injure your skin while the area is numb
  • gently wash the area with soap and water after 6 hours has passed
  • use cold compresses to reduce swelling, and avoid exposure to cold temperatures or intense heat (e.g., sun lamp or sunbathing)
  • avoid taking Aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications, St. John’s Wort, or high doses of vitamin E supplements for 1 week after treatment, as these agents may increase bruising and bleeding at the injection site

If you experience side effects such as swelling redness, pain, itching or discolouration beyond 14 days, contact your injection specialist.

What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are smooth injectable gels made from naturally-occurring hyaluronic acid. Dermal fillers do 2 key things – 1) they plump the skin and gently lift it, and 2) they encourage the body to produce its own natural collagen and restore your face to a more natural, youthful appearance.

What is hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a complex sugar naturally found in many tissues of the body such as skin and cartilage. It binds to water to create more fullness and elasticity in the skin to correct the appearance of wrinkles and facial folds.

What should I expect before treatment?

Our Cosmetic Injection Specialist will have an in-depth consultation with you to understand your needs and what facial features you would like to enhance. She will explain all the options to make sure that your dermal filler treatment meets your expectations and will discuss the benefits and risks of all options.

What are the possible side effects?

Potential side effects associated with dermal fillers include temporary injection-site reactions such as redness, swelling, itching, pain, firmness, bumps, bruising and discolouration. These reactions may occur immediately or may be delayed, and may last for up to a week. Injection in the lip may cause more swelling and bruising due to the unique physiology of this area. As with any injection, there is a risk of infection. This is not a complete list of side effects. If inflammatory reactions persist for more than one week, or if any other side effects develop, you should seek medical attention.

How long does the treatment usually take?

The injection process is quick and easy and can be completed in as little as 15-60 minutes, depending on the areas treated.

Will there be swelling?

Following a dermal filler injection, you may experience slight redness, swelling, or bruising at the injected area. These effects should not last for more than a week.

How long before I see results?

Results are instant. You will see an immediate improvement in the treatment area but it typically takes approximately 2 weeks to see the finished lasting results. Most people need only one treatment to achieve an optimal outcome. Supplemental “touch-up” treatments may be required to achieve and maintain the desired look.

How long does it last?

Average results last approximately 1 year but can vary depending on the individual. It can also vary based on the specific filler used.

Is there anything I should do to prepare for my treatment?

Disclose to our Cosmetic Injection Specialist if you are taking any medications that may prolong bleeding, such as Aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS). We will provide advice on how to reduce the risk of bruising and bleeding at the injection site.

What is the recovery time following a treatment?

Treatment requires minimal downtime and most people return to their normal routine immediately.

What should I do after treatment?

Our Cosmetic Injection Specialist will advise you on your aftercare. You may be advised to stop wearing makeup for up to 12 hours. You may also be told to avoid the sun, UV light, freezing temperatures, as well as saunas and steam rooms for 2 weeks. Some people experience a little temporary tenderness, swelling or bruising around the injection sites. It is also recommended that you avoid additional treatments in the treated area for the next 7 days.
